Welcome to the Fisheries Oceanography Lab of The College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. Our work focuses on factors that affect the spatial and temporal dynamics of marine fish populations. Research projects range from ecological scales of meters and days (PhD student Jenn Wong-Ala), to decades and entire basins (PhD student Rebecca Howard, Alumnus Laura Vary), and relative management implications (Alumnus Giancarlo M. Correa). We combine field and experimental approaches with analytical tools such as statistical and mathematical modeling to address issues like:
- changes in spawning phenology and geography during fish early life stages (eggs, larvae and juveniles)
- spatial and temporal trait variability and implications for assessment and management
- movement of particles in nearshore waters and implications for marine protected areas and larval dispersal
- impacts of climate change on adult and larval fishesÂ
- nearshore groundfish assemblages and trawl fleet identity
- interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches in graduate education
Most of our work concerns issues that have societal relevance, and therefore our study teams contain very broad and diverse range of expertise. The results of our studies can have practical and immediate management applications.
